The following ten famous paintings were all stolen once. Some are found back, some are destroyed, and some are still missing.

Now: Presumably burnt by an accomplice

9. Le pigeon aux petits pois by Pablo Picasso

Worth: $28 million
Date Stolen: May 2010
Where: Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris,
Now: The painting has been confirmed as discarded, as the thief threw it in a trash container shortly after the theft.

8. View of the Sea at Scheveningen by Vincent van Gogh

Worth: $133 million
Date Stolen: December 7, 2002
Where: Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Now: Unknown

7. Poppy Flowers by Vincent van Gogh

Worth: $50 million
Date Stolen: August 2010
Where: Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil Museum, Cairo, Egypt
Now: Unknown

6. The Concert by Johannes Vermeer

Date Stolen: March 18, 1990
Where: Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Where: National Gallery, Oslo and Munch Museum, Oslo
Now: Found back, now in the National Gallery, Oslo, Norway

2. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt

Worth: $135 million
Date Stolen: 1940s
Where: Austria
Now: When the Nazis took over Austria, her widowed husband had to flee to Switzerland. His property, including the Klimt paintings, was confiscated. In his 1945 testament, Bloch-Bauer designated his nephew and nieces, including Maria Altmann, as the inheritors of his estate

1. Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

Worth: Pricesless
Date Stolen: 1911
Where: Louvre
Now: The Mona Lisa painting now hangs in the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The painting’s increasing fame was further emphasized when it was stolen on August 21, 1911. The Louvre was closed for an entire week to aid in investigation of the theft.
